Bayeux Tapestries

Bayeux tapestries are embroidery that records the Norman Conquest, the conquest in which William the conqueror conquers England. The reproductions of these traditional tapestries are available in the tapestry collection on the site Tapestries-tapestry.com. Tapestries are one of traditional crafts that have survived the vagaries of time and are still admired for its uniqueness.

The tapestry is a long strip of coarse linen, which is embroidered in eight colors. The tapestry documents the history and costumes of the era. French and Belgian artisans reproduce these world-renowned tapestries on jacquard machines. Later the tapestries are hand finished by the artisans. These masterpieces that include Battle of Hastings, William the conqueror, Mathilde and Duke of Normandy can be found as Bayeux tapestries.

Bayeux tapestries are generally 20 inch tall and around 230 feet long. These tell a specific battle story depicting a series of event till the battle of Hastingson, 14th October 1066. The tapestries have preserved the grandeur of the Normandy conquest. Initially it was thought that William's wife Matilda commissioned the Bayeux tapestries but later it was attributed to Williams's brother bishop Odo of Bayeux, Earl of Kent. The first mention of the tapestry is found in the 1476 inventory of the Bayeux Cathedral. The tapestry was used as a wagon cover by the French revolutionaries but was later rescued by lawyer. Tapestries on Bayeux are part of our rich legacy and connect us to our eventful history.
